PortencrossMurderSaturday October 18 1913

A short walk to the north of Portencross village lies Northbank cottage, isolated and close to the sea, however it was the scene of a murder unsolved to this day.

In May 1913 three people moved into the cottage, they were Alexander MacLaren and his wife, Jessie and his sister in law Miss Mary Speir Gunn.

The three of them were sitting in the cottage on the evening of Saturday 18 October,
Alexander MacLaren was reading aloud from a book when suddenly the peace was shattered by gun fire, smashing the window the bullet hit Miss Gunn.

CumnockCastleHotelMuralCumnock (Cumnag in Gaelic) is a town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The town sits at the confluence of the Glaisnock Water and the Lugar Water. There are three neighbouring housing projects which lie just outside the town boundaries, Craigens, Logan and Netherthird, with the former ironworks settlement of Lugar also just outside the town, contributing to a population of around 13,000 in the immediate locale. A new housing development, Knockroon, was granted planning permission on 9 Dec, 2009 by East Ayrshire Council.

Once again this year, I’ve had requests for my Vodka Christmas Cake recipe so here goes. Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year! (Made mine this past weekend!!!!)

SkaraBraeOrkneyOn the southern shore of the Bay o' Skaill, in the West Mainland parish of Sandwick, is the Neolithic village of Skara Brae - one of Orkney's most-visited ancient sites and regarded by many as one of the most remarkable monuments in Europe.415

The Neolithic village of Skara Brae was discovered in the winter of 1850. Wild storms ripped the grass from a high dune known as Skara Brae, beside the Bay of Skaill, and exposed an immense midden (refuse heap) and the ruins of ancient stone buildings. The discovery proved to be the best-preserved Neolithic village in northern Europe. And so it remains today.

halloumiHalloumi or hallumi : (Greek: χαλούμι or χαλλούμι; Turkish: hellim; Arabic: حلوم‎ ḥallūm) is a Cypriot semi-hard, un-ripened brined cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, and sometimes also cow's milk. It has a high melting point and so can easily be fried or grilled. Halloumi is set with rennet and is unusual in that no acid or acid-producing bacterium is used in its preparation.

Halloumi is popular in Cyprus, Greece and the Levant.

Halloumi cheese originated in Cyprus and was initially made during the Medieval Byzantine period (AD 395 – 1191), subsequently gaining popularity throughout the Middle East region.

fancy swastika thumbOn the evening of 17th September, in a neighborhood of Athens, a 34-year old hip-hop artist and antifascist activist Pavlos Fyssas was murdered by a gang of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn. The murderer admitted to be a member of Golden Dawn while it is known that he is on the party’s payroll. This crime was the follow up of the violent attack of Golden Dawn members against the Greek Communist Party that were just hanging posters. Fyssas was the second known murder of Golden Dawn this year after the murder of a Pakistani immigrant on 17/01/2013 who was killed while biking to work in Athens. This was the culmination of hundreds of reported incidents of racist violence during the last years in Greece.

Once again the police made no effort to prevent the murder. According to several eyewitnesses, a special police unit known for their sympathy to the neo-Nazi’s (DIAS) were standing next to the spot of the murder, just watching and refusing to intervene. On the contrary, during the large protests followed the murder, the police used extreme and unprovoked violence against the protesters prosecuted dozens while it allowed Golden Dawn members standing behind police lines to attack demonstrators with stones.
